Controls work, dinner is ready—and the oven is still cold?
A no-heat complaint can come from a setting, door, power supply, installation, heating element, ignition system, sensor, safety device, wiring, or control. Start with the safe external checks; do not test a live 240-volt circuit or experiment with gas.

First separate the symptom
“Not heating” can describe four different oven problems.
No heat at all: the controls accept Bake or Broil, but the cavity remains cold. Power, settings, Demo mode, door logic, a heating or ignition component, wiring, safety devices, and controls are among the possibilities.
Very slow preheat: the oven warms but takes far longer than normal. Supply voltage, an inactive heating system, door loss, settings, installation, and model design can affect preheat time.
Wrong average temperature: food repeatedly cooks too fast or too slowly after normal preheating. Calibration, sensing, door sealing, airflow, cookware, rack position, and heating performance may matter.
Uneven cooking: one side or rack behaves differently. Overcrowding, foil, cookware, rack placement, convection airflow, door sealing, and an inactive element or fan can contribute.
Record which description fits, whether Bake and Broil behave differently, whether the cooktop works, and any error code. That evidence is more useful than ordering the part most often named online.

Six safe checks before scheduling oven service.
Use the instructions for the exact model. Stop immediately for gas odor, smoke, sparking, repeated breaker trips, abnormal heat at the cord or cabinet, or a violent ignition event.

Set a real cooking mode
Select Bake or Broil, enter a temperature, and press Start or the model-specific confirmation control. A kitchen timer, delayed start, warming feature, or unconfirmed temperature may make the display appear active without requesting oven heat.

Close the door completely
Remove anything preventing closure and confirm the door is not resting on a rack, pan, foil, or towel. Some ovens stop or limit heating when the door remains open. Do not force a locked self-clean latch.

Check special modes in the manual
Demo mode can leave controls working while heat is disabled. Control Lock, Sabbath mode, showroom settings, delayed start, and model-specific options behave differently. Use the exact owner’s manual rather than a generic button sequence.

Reset the correct breaker once
If there is no gas odor, smoke, sparking, hot wiring, or repeated trip, turn the identified range or wall-oven breaker fully off, wait at least 30 seconds, and turn it back on. If it trips again, leave it off and arrange service.

Compare Bake, Broil, and the cooktop
Without touching an element or opening panels, note which functions respond. Surface burners working does not prove the oven system is healthy, but Bake-versus-Broil and cooktop behavior help separate the affected circuit or ignition system.

Remove airflow obstructions
If the oven heats poorly rather than staying cold, remove foil from the oven bottom and racks, reduce overcrowding, use the recommended rack position, and keep the door closed during preheat. Never cover an oven vent.
Do not turn an oven into an electrical or gas experiment. Do not touch an element to test it, probe live voltage, remove a wall oven, clean or handle an igniter, adjust a regulator, alter gas piping, bypass a door or safety switch, defeat a fuse, or use the oven to heat the room. Never run self-clean to “burn off” a heating problem.
What the pattern can reveal
Useful clues—without pretending the clue names the part.
Display is completely dead
The problem may involve the branch circuit, connection, terminal, fuse, control power, wiring, or another supply condition. A dead display is different from a display that accepts a cooking command but produces no heat.
Cooktop works, oven stays cold
Surface and oven systems use different components. A working cooktop does not rule out an oven element, igniter, valve, sensor, safety device, relay, control, wiring, or partial-supply problem.
Broil works, Bake does not
The difference narrows the inspection toward the systems used specifically during Bake, but modern controls may cycle multiple elements. It does not prove the visible lower element alone failed.
Preheat is unusually slow
An inactive heating system, incorrect electric supply, frequent door opening, low gas performance, installation, settings, or model-specific preheat behavior can extend the cycle.
Temperature seems wrong
Ovens normally cycle above and below the set point. A single thermometer reading can lag or lead the cavity temperature. Consistent cooking results and a manufacturer-approved test are more useful than one snapshot.
Error code or Demo indicator
Photograph the display before resetting power. The code or indicator must be interpreted using the exact model; similar-looking codes can mean different things across brands and platforms.
What professional diagnosis separates
Gas and electric ovens reach the same temperature by very different means.
On an electric range or wall oven, diagnosis may include the branch supply, terminal and wiring, bake and broil systems, relays, temperature sensor, thermal protection, door or latch inputs, convection components, and electronic controls. A working display or cooktop does not establish that the heating circuit has its required supply.
On a gas oven, the ignition sequence, igniter current or spark system, burner ignition, flame behavior, gas valve, regulator or installation conditions, sensing, controls, wiring, and ventilation may matter. Gas work is not diagnosed by allowing unburned fuel to accumulate while watching for a flame.

Why does the stovetop work but the electric oven does not heat?
The cooktop and oven use different components and may use different portions of the electrical supply. Controls, a bake or broil element, wiring, a sensor, a safety device, a relay, or another oven-specific failure can stop oven heat while surface elements still work.
Why do the gas burners work but the oven does not?
Surface burners working does not prove the oven ignition system is operating correctly. Settings, installation, the igniter, burner, gas valve, controls, wiring, or another oven-specific condition may be involved. Gas odor or delayed ignition requires immediate shutdown and emergency guidance.
Can I reset an oven that is not heating?
If there is no gas odor, smoke, sparking, hot wiring, or repeated breaker problem, follow the model’s manual and cycle the correct oven or range breaker fully off and back on once. If it trips again or heating does not return, stop and arrange service.
Should I use an oven thermometer to diagnose the problem?
A single inexpensive thermometer reading does not prove a failed sensor or calibration problem because ovens cycle above and below the set temperature and thermometer response varies. Record cooking behavior and preheat timing, then use the model-specific manufacturer procedure.
Can I replace the visible bake element myself?
Visible damage is useful evidence but does not prove that the element is the only failure or that the circuit is safe.
