Clean the lint screen completely
Remove the lint before every load. Hold the screen up to light; if residue visibly blocks the mesh, follow the cleaning instructions in the dryer manual and let it dry completely before reinstalling it.

Is the dryer cold, or is moisture trapped?
Cold drum after a heated test: use the separate dryer-not-heating guide. Electric supply, the heating system, gas ignition, a safety device, wiring, or controls may be involved.
Warm or hot drum with damp clothes: begin with airflow, load, cycle, and washer-spin checks. A dryer removes water by moving heated air through the load and exhausting that moisture outdoors. Heat alone is not enough.
Cycle ends very quickly while clothes are wet: that is a different clue. Load size, cycle choice, or moisture-sensor behavior may be involved instead of a long-running dryer.

These checks require no cabinet removal, live-voltage testing, or unsafe movement of a heavy or stacked appliance.
Check what came out of the washer
Clothing should be damp—not dripping or unusually heavy. Run a drain-and-spin cycle if needed. If loads repeatedly leave the washer soaked, the washer may be creating the dryer complaint.
Reduce and separate the load
Clothes need room to tumble and let air pass between them. Split an overfilled load, untangle sheets, and dry heavy towels or bedding separately from lighter fabrics.
Check the cycle and energy-saving options
Eco settings, low heat, bulky-item cycles, and some sensor programs are intentionally slower. For comparison, use a heated timed cycle allowed by the garment-care labels. Do not use Air Fluff or Air Only as a heat test.
Look at both ends of the visible vent path
Without moving the appliance unsafely, look for a hose crushed behind the dryer. While it runs, check from a safe outdoor position that the exterior hood opens freely and exhaust is present. Do not reach into a moving fan or climb to an unsafe vent.
Stop using the dryer if you smell burning, see smoke or scorching, find heat damage at the cord or outlet, feel abnormal cabinet heat, or receive a repeated airflow or overheat warning. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location. Never bypass a thermal fuse or other safety device.
Four systems can create one complaint
“Takes forever” is a symptom, not a parts diagnosis.
A useful diagnosis starts outside the dryer as often as it starts inside it.
The washer
A weak or incomplete final spin sends extra water into the dryer. That can double dry time even when the dryer and vent work normally.
The load and settings
Overloading blocks circulation. Mixed heavy and light fabrics dry unevenly. Eco or low-temperature settings trade speed for lower heat or fabric care.
The exhaust path
A loaded screen, crushed connector, lint restriction, stuck exterior hood, excessive length, or too many turns can keep moisture from leaving the house.
The dryer itself
Intermittent heat, a loose blower, sensor or control trouble, internal lint buildup, or another mechanical or electrical failure can remain after the external causes are ruled out.
Why airflow matters: restricted exhaust can hold heat and humidity inside the system. Clothes stay damp, cycle times grow, and the dryer may overheat even though it feels plenty warm. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises periodically cleaning the lint screen, dryer vent, and exhaust duct to reduce dryer-fire risk.

Why is my dryer hot but the clothes are still damp?
Heat may be present while moist air cannot leave efficiently. Start with the lint screen, a crushed connector, the exterior vent hood, load size, and how wet the washer left the clothing. Restricted airflow is common, but appliance failures can also produce weak or intermittent heating.
Does needing two cycles mean the heating element is failing?
Not by itself. Many electric heating elements work or fail completely, while airflow, washer spin, load, and cycle issues commonly cause long dry times. Some component failures can create intermittent or reduced performance, so testing matters after the external causes are checked.
How long should a dryer cycle take?
There is no trustworthy single number for every dryer and load. Fabric weight, load size, starting wetness, cycle, temperature, vent design, and dryer model all change the time. A familiar load suddenly taking much longer than it used to is a better warning sign.
Can I run the dryer with the vent disconnected to test it?
Do not improvise a disconnected indoor exhaust test. Dryers are intended to be installed and exhausted according to their model instructions; gas-dryer exhaust also contains combustion products. Use visible external checks or qualified service instead.
